New Scholarships Established at HBU
(April 24, 2002) – Houston Baptist University has seven more reasons to call itself Houston’s Blessed University. With the University approaching its 40th anniversary, the endowed scholarship program is more than 250 scholarships strong. Recently, seven more scholarships were dedicated.
The Dunwoody Endowed Scholarship: Given by Faye Dunwoody (77024) and their children, the scholarship was named in memory of Ray Dunwoody, a friend of the University and successful businessman who passed away on Dec. 1, 2000.
The Marvy A. Finger Endowed Scholarship (honoring Stewart Morris): As long time friends and business partners, Finger (77019, 77007) knew that there was no better way to honor Dr. Morris (77042) than to give a scholarship to the University which he helped to found and additionally serves as the current Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The Karl and Mary Kennard Endowed Scholarship: (77388) The Kennard’s belief in the value of Christian education led them to establish a nursing scholarship. Karl Kennard is currently serving his fourth term on the Board of Trustees.
The Laura Wallis Ferguson Endowed Scholarship: Given by her parents Gilbert and Nell Wallis (77081), the scholarship was named in memory of Laura Wallis Ferguson. Laura’s greatest happiness was realized when she was able to positively effect another’s life, and because of that her parents chose to forever impact the lives of HBU students through a scholarship in her name.
The Gwen A. and Michel J. Mellinger Endowed Scholarship (honoring Yolande Frazier) and The Gwen A. and Michel J. Mellinger Endowed Scholarship (honoring Holly F. Cannon): The first scholarship established by the Mellingers honors their daughter, Yolande Frazier (77244), and benefits the School of Music. The second scholarship is named in honor of their granddaughter Holly F. Cannon (77083), an HBU alumna, and benefits the College of Nursing.
The E.P. West – Gaze Scholarship (honoring Ted Gaze <77081>): The E.P. West Sunday school class at Second Baptist Church was led by Gaze’s concern for Christian Education and people of all ages to provide a scholarship in his name. A member of the class since 1971, Gaze also served as Associate Pastor who shepherded the church for two years prior to Dr. Ed Young being called as Pastor and then Pastoral Care Minister until 1996.
Donors of the endowed scholarships have an exceptional opportunity to impact not only the University but also a specific student through their gifts. During the 2000-2001 school year, more than $520,000 was awarded to 105 students.
